Study Abroad Blog: The Dumpster Diaries
Part I - The Odyssey
Well, I am doing it. Today I start my month long study abroad program and I decided to make a blog to update everyone on my travels. I can’t wait to start this adventure and really discover myself.
I always considered myself more of a suburban girl, so it is really crazy that I decided to take this leap of faith in my travels. I’m just a regular girl, with a passport and my dreams, trying to find myself.
Follow me if you are ready to buckle your seatbelt for the biggest adventure I will ever experience - studying abroad in Dumpster. Here goes nothing! Wish me luck! Thanks mom!
Part II - The Journey
I would really like to think blogs are great for self reflection. You know, understanding who you are for the world to see.
I was going to use some of this space to talk about hegemonic power structures, and how we should fight the patriarchy, but instead I’m going to talk about what I’ve been up to in the Dumpster. To say the least, it is Ah-Maz-Ing here. I’ve never seen so many rotten potatoes (I didn’t even know potatoes went bad, how exciting!), and broken beer bottles. I almost cut my foot on one, but luckily a bug infested couch cushion saved me.
I’m definitely learning a lot about the culture here, like in Dumpster (which by the way, it’s pronounced like Doom-stey, with a half British-like and half Canadian-like accent. History lesson: Dumpster was colonized by the British-French Canadians shortly after the Great Sorghum Disaster of 1820. People here definitely are so much nicer than America (guess I found somewhere to live when Donnie T. becomes the next prez lololololol am I right?).
The other day I went diving which yes, is a metaphor for how I am diving into this culture, my life, and the wondrous adventures that await me on this journey of self-discovery, but I also went diving a little further, and discovered marvelous things. I found: used toilet paper, several old needles, some moldy bread (which is a delicacy in this country), an IKEA dresser (crazy they have IKEA here too!), and a finger with bright red nail polish on it!
I saw so many things in my travels, and not to completely brag about how amazing my life is right now, but I really found what I was missing in my life - a crusty electronic toothbrush and how to fix my parent’s marriage.
Follow me for later updates, and until next time: This is the beginning of something beautiful…
