Quick Tricks to Impress Your Parents

Heading home to see your folks can sometimes feel like a lot of pressure. We all want our parent’s pride, and to show them we’ve learned a lot and grown as people since we’ve been living on our own. Many students aren’t sure how best to impress their family, which is why I’ve cooked up a few quick tricks to really leave them stunned!

When you see your parents, call them by their first name!

This newfound sense of informality will let them know that you, too, are now an adult and to be respected as one of their peers. After speaking their true names, they’ll have no choice but to recognize that you’ve matured into an adult, and definitely do not pee in your Lothrop Hall bedroom sink!

Try reading the thesaurus entries for words you frequently use, then try to incorporate these new terms into your vocabulary.

For example, if you’re someone who says ‘big’ a lot, try saying ‘large’ next time you’re home. Using new, more complex words will reassure your parents that you’re learning big things and definitely not skipping classes to stay home and watch daytime reruns of South Park!

Remember how George Washington couldn’t tell a lie? Good thing you’re not him!

If you’re not doing well in your classes, just don’t talk about them at all!

In fact, the more conspicuously silent you remain about your schoolwork when your parents ask, the more the more they’ll know you’ve got it under control and definitely aren’t in way over your head and cracking under the pressure!

I hope these tips have been insightful and help you leave a lasting impression on your family. But if all else fails, just be yourself-- your family will love you regardless. Enjoy your time home and tell your folks I said hello!
